Enjoy Mozart, Salzburg’s most famous son, this summer & autumn

As we gear up for OTC's brand new production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni at Dublin Theatre Festival and Cork Opera House in the autumn, we thought we’d let you know about some unmissable Mozart coming up at Kilkenny Arts Festival next month.

Our colleagues in Kilkenny are presenting Mozart: Prince of Music, and this epic celebration of Mozart's musical prowess includes concert performances of one of his greatest opera achievements Idomeneo, cycles of his piano sonatas, string quartets and late symphonies, alongside other masterworks, lectures and talks.

Idomeneo, Mozart’s first operatic masterpiece 11.08.2016

Idomeneo is Mozart’s first operatic masterpiece, and the most epic and symphonic of all his opera scores. Blessed with access to the Mannheim Orchestra (the finest ensemble in Germany), Mozart created a revolutionary work that charted a path forward for his own later operatic achievements.

Set just after the Trojan War, Idomeneo tells the story of the eponymous king of Crete. Saved from drowning by Neptune, the king makes a fateful vow to sacrifice the first living creature he sees, but that creature turns out to be his beloved son Idamante…

Idomeneo has not been heard at full scale in the Republic since 1956; these two concert performances offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience this glorious work. The Festival’s orchestra in residence is conducted by Christian Curnyn, whose Early Opera Company presented a stunning Acis and Galatea at the 2014 Festival, while celebrated tenor John Mark Ainsley takes the title role, joined by two of the finest Irish singers of their generation - Anna Devin and Rachel Kelly - and by Rebecca von Lipinski, star of the Stuttgart State Opera.

Thursday 11 & Saturday 13 August @ 7.30pm.    Tickets from €39.50
