The life and soul of the world is love!

Andrea Chénier is in danger of losing his head. As France cowers under the Reign of Terror, the poet is falling madly, passionately in love. A gripping story based on true events unfolds swiftly in Umberto Giordano’s famous opera, beloved by audiences and performers for its magnificent arias, tender love story and dramatic music.

A poet, philosopher and defender ofthe poor, Andrea Chénier believes in the ideals of his revolutionary brothers: Liberty! Equality! Fraternity! Now the revolution is over, but La Guillotine hasn’t lost her taste for blood. The revolutionaries, once so idealistic, are turning on their own to keep her fed.

Superstar tenor Jonas Kaufmann returns to Australia in one of his most celebrated roles. A concert performance of Andrea Chénier offers the perfect showcase for his “dark, liquid tone, which soars through the music with refined ease and intensity” (The Guardian). A stellar supporting cast includes Ludovic Tézier, one of the world’s greatest baritones, and Eva-Maria Westbroek as Chénier’s lover, Maddalena, who sings the heartbreaking ‘La mamma morta’.

Set in the social-political upheaval of the French Revolution, Andrea Chénier is a passionate tale about romance, liberty, and the high cost of both. Based on the real life story of poet and philosopher Andrea Chénier, it received 20 curtain calls and rave reviews when first performed in Milan in 1896. Despite this, Andrea Chenier has become a rarity in the 21stcentury, along with much of Giordano’s operas, and is therefore a not-to-be-missed event for opera lovers.

La Traviata  –  Sydney Harbour

Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour,  Venue: Fleet Steps, Mrs Macquarie’s Point

Performances  27 March – 26 April  2020

Featuring fireworks every night and a pop-up venue with comfortable grandstand seating,  La Traviata on Sydney Harbour will be a night to remember!

Violetta is the life of every party. A courtesan with a heart of gold, she’s free and free-spirited. Could a little love change everything? Experience the joy and heartache of the world’s most popular opera at Sydney’s best night out, with fireworks lighting up the sky at every performance.

Violetta wears velvet and lace and drinks the very best champagne from crystal glasses. Her parties are legendary, her company desired. She’s free and free-spirited, living outside society’s bounds, and for this courtesan, it seems like the party will never end. Could a little love really change everything?

La Traviata is so popular because it puts a life we can only dream of on stage, with its risqué glamour, joys and sorrows. Verdi’s music sings of freedom with flying melodies, makes merry with rousing drinking songs and leaves us, at the last, with passionate duets between breaking hearts.

This production by Elijah Moshinsky is one of our most successful, featuring lush party scenes in Paris and beautiful autumn afternoons in the countryside.

Lavish, crowded sets and exquisite costumes combined with Verdi’s famous tunes offer the perfect way to experience opera for the first time, or the chance to revisit a favourite with an exciting new cast.

Adored at home and sought-after abroad, Nicole Car makes her debut as Violetta.
