Das **Opernhaus von Sydney,** Meisterstück moderner Architektur, 1973 eingeweiht, ist eines der drei großen Wahrzeichen Australiens. Neben der über 100 Jahre alten **Harbour Bridge** und dem Legenden-umwobenen **Ayers Rock** in der Mitte des Kontinents. Das **Sydney Opera House** beherbergt mehrere kulturelle Einrichtungen: Die **Concert Hall** mit 2700 Sitzen und das **Opera Theatre** mit 1547 Sitzplätzen: Architektonisch ist das **Sydney Opera House** inzwischen Weltkulturerbe.

Der Bau des **Sydney Opera Houses** war zunächst ein komplettes Desaster: Ursprünglich mit 7 Millionen Au$ veranschlagt, überstiegen die Baukosten am Ende über 100 Millionen AU$. Die Bauzeit erstreckte sich wegen bautechnischer Streitigkeiten über sieben Jahre. Äußerlich mit verzaubernder Optik lebt die Oper im Innern mit erheblichen Einschränkungen: Der Bühnenraum besitzt keine Tiefe, Bühnenbilder müssen flach sein, deren Anlieferung ist schwierig. Das Ensemble agiert häufig gefährlich nah am Orchestergraben. Der Orchestergraben wiederum verschwindet zur Hälfte unter den Bühnenboden, welches dem Orchesterklang ein wenig Brillianz raubt. Doch der verzaubernde Flair der **Sydney Opera** verzeiht alle baulichen Mängel. Für Europäer wird ein Besuch der **Sydney Opera** zu einem lebendigen Traum.

Das **Sydney Opera House** wird im **Stagionesystem** betrieben. Im Juni / Juli 2013 werden die Opern *The Force of Destiny, Tosca, Don Pasquale* und *Albert Herring* gespielt. 2011 bestand der Spielplan von Januar bis März aus den Opern *Carmen, Partenope* und der 17 Mal gespielten*.* Von April bis Juni ist meist Saisonpause**.** Das nächste Opernhaus in **Brisbane** oder **Melbourne** ist über 1.000 Kilometer entfernt. # The Force of Destiny - Verdi: 29 June 2013 – 23 July 2013

### **Die Macht des Schicksals von Verdi in Down under** 

This production promises to be a thrilling version o**f Giuseppe Verdi's** classic opera of vendetta, elopement, love, vengeance and doom.

A giant human skull as the focal point. A chorus draped in black veils and wearing skull masks. A dramatic production where candle-lit interiors and earthy exteriors change in the blink of an eye. Welcome to director Tama Matheson’s mainstage opera debut and what promises to be a thrilling version of Verdi’s classic opera of vendetta, elopement, love, vengeance and doom.

The overture is among Verdi’s best, an exciting prelude to a plot replete with chaotic events, passionate characters and many a coincidence that takes them to boiling point. Mark Thompson’s stunning set and richly-detailed costumes conjure a dark, expressive landscape where death stalks the stage. The glory of war is undercut in a shattering climax of strident, resonating power.

The production features an all-star cast. Bulgarian soprano Svetla Vassileva portrays Leonora in her Opera Australia debut. Acclaimed international tenor Riccardo Massi plays Don Alvaro while the exemplary bass Giacomo Prestia also makes his Sydney Opera House debut. They are joined by many of the Company’s best-loved singers, including Jonathan Summers, Warwick Fyfe and Kanen Breen.
